Cheo is located in Vernazza, within the national park of Cinque Terre, an area that was nominated by Unesco World Heritage Site in 1997 thanks to the typical terraced landscape created throughout the centuries by the local inhabitants. The steep coast, plunging directly into the sea, was once covered from top to bottom by vineyards and olive groves and the fame of Cinque Terre wines dates back to the Roman Empire. Unfortunately, due to post war industrialization and the recent tourism based economy, the majority of the land has been abandoned and this impressive work of human labour is at risk of becoming little more than a memory. That’s why we consider preserving the dry stone walls that form the terraces one of our topmost priorities.
